Scalable Financial Infrastructure to Drive Rapid Growth Without Internal Overhead

When Bobyard partnered with Graphite in 2024, the construction AI startup with fewer than five employees needed accounting, tax, and payroll expertise it could rely on to support rapid expansion. Graphite brought that expertise together in one team, providing Bobyard with a solid financial foundation to scale without needing to hire an internal finance team, allowing them to focus hiring on roles to help expand the business.

Following a $35M Series A in December 2025, Bobyard grew from 16 to 100 employees. Graphite handled the increasing volume and complexity across accounting, tax, and payroll, helping the company manage rapid expansion with consistent support from specialists who knew its business.

  • 2+ hours saved weekly for the Operations Manager by eliminating manual recoding and reconciliation.
  • Scalable infrastructure that expanded critical finance functions without the overhead of an internal team.
  • Greater confidence in its financials to pivot internal resources toward aggressive expansion.
  • Reliable accounting, tax, and payroll support through a $35M Series A and rapid business expansion.

About Bobyard

The AI Software Company Building the Future for Construction Trades

Bobyard, started in 2023, is an innovative AI takeoff software for the construction industry. Its mission is simple: make construction estimating faster, more accurate, and more accessible for every contractor. Bobyard’s software reads construction drawings and blueprints, measures and counts every material needed for a project, and organizes them so estimators can price work faster.

Today, Bobyard is the leading AI takeoff software for the construction industry, which has expanded into multiple construction trades, including landscaping, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, finishes, and floor plan takeoffs. The software cuts takeoff times by up to 90%, allowing trade contractors to submit three to five times more bids.

In December 2025, Bobyard secured a $35M Series A round at a $170M valuation. Since then, the staff grew from 16 to 100 with major expansion plans underway.

The Background

Significant Growth on the Backs of a Small, Determined Team

Bobyard set significant growth goals from the start. In its early stages, the company operated as a small team with a lean structure, but leadership knew they were building a product destined for significant growth. To prepare for future fundraising and aggressive market expansion, Bobyard needed clean books, compliant tax processes, and reliable payroll. But the company didn’t have the bandwidth or the desire to build a full internal finance team early on.

Instead of funding an in-house finance department, Bobyard preferred to direct its capital toward marketplace expansion. Building the necessary level of expertise across accounting, tax, and payroll internally would have required significant time and investment that the growing startup couldn't spare.

The Challenge

Finance Help Needed to Support Small Staff in a Fast-growing Company

The struggle for Bobyard's small team was managing their increasing financial needs without diverting time and energy away from aggressive growth targets. Haley Hineman, Bobyard’s Chief of Staff, noted that the company wanted its staff focused on expansion, not on becoming experts in all things finance. The biggest hurdle? Finding an outside partner with the operational maturity to take end-to-end ownership of these financial functions.

“We needed our internal team focused on building and growing the business rather than becoming experts in accounting, tax compliance, payroll, and all of the operational complexity that comes with scaling a company.”

The Solution

Finding a Partner to Handle Both Immediate Needs and Long-term Growth

Haley said Bobyard was looking for a combination that is difficult to find: the deep expertise and horsepower of a larger finance firm with the dedicated responsiveness and attention of a bespoke partner. They also needed confidence that their future financial infrastructure wouldn't just solve their immediate needs at 15 to 20 employees, but would seamlessly support more volume and complexity as they scaled past 100 employees. Bobyard’s VC network recommended Graphite Financial, which gave the startup confidence in Graphite early on and helped seal the deal.

“Graphite wasn’t about finding the cheapest option,” Haley says. “It was about value.” Building the same level of expertise across accounting, tax, and payroll internally would have required significant time and investment, especially at an early stage, Haley states. They were confident Graphite could create the infrastructure to grow with them.

The Transformation

Less Time Spent on Coding, More Proactive Financial Accuracy

Graphite worked with Bobyard during the highly collaborative 30-45 day onboarding with deep-dive weekly syncs to learn the business and get the right foundations set up for its aggressive growth plans. Right away, Graphite took over accounting, including the tedious process of coding and managing expenses. For Operations Manager Adriana Morales, this eliminated manual recoding, saving her at least two hours every week. Graphite's team flags anomalies, ambiguities, or higher-than-normal expenses, allowing Adriana to quickly review and clarify via a quick conversation, usually over Slack.

For example, when Bobyard signed a new office lease, the Graphite team immediately identified the transaction, contacted Morales about it, and categorized it correctly, ensuring everything was appropriately documented for accounting and tax purposes.

An Extension of the Team Through Every Stage of Growth

Haley says the biggest value Graphite brings is that it understands Bobyard’s business and provides continuity across accounting, tax, and payroll as Bobyard scales. “The volume and complexity behind the scenes have changed tremendously as we’ve gone from 16 to 100 employees so quickly,” Haley says. Graphite allowed the company to scale critical finance functions without spending money to hire an equally large internal finance team to keep up with the growth.

“As Bobyard has grown from 16 to 100 employees, Graphite has grown with us and allowed our team to stay focused on building the business while knowing the fundamentals are taken care of.”

Haley also describes the partnership as having a highly valuable "set it and forget it" element with the fundamentals of payroll, tax, and accounting handled seamlessly and consistently, which is extremely important to the team. When occasional questions arise, Bobyard’s dedicated Graphite service leads are incredibly responsive and collaborative. Haley says Bobyard feels like their Graphite representatives are just another integral part of their remote workforce.

What's Next

Set to Handle Continued Growth Plans and Increased Complexity

Since turning to Graphite Financial in 2024, Bobyard has successfully scaled its financial operations while achieving ambitious business goals. The company’s hard work and clean, reliable financials empowered it to successfully raise a $35M Series A in December 2025 and to navigate rapid 5X headcount in less than a year.

Bobyard aims to double annual recurring revenue while continuing to expand in the marketplace. Haley says she expects the complexity of the business to continue to grow as Bobyard scales. “We want Graphite to continue scaling alongside us, helping us maintain the strong financial foundation we’ve built while our internal team focuses on the next stage,” she notes. Haley says Bobyard sees opportunities for Graphite to help them with Accounts Receivable and will explore how Graphite can create more leverage for Bobyard.

By combining their internal FP&A talent with Graphite's diligent accounting, payroll, and tax expertise, Bobyard has a clear, reliable roadmap for navigating complex financial growth.

“Graphite came highly recommended through our VC network, which gave us confidence early on. As we’ve grown and added more finance expertise internally, that decision has continued to be validated. We knew we had chosen a team with the experience and infrastructure to support a company at our pace of growth.”
